An expanded list of abrasives and clarification of testing responsibilities are among the new updates to an abrasive specification from SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings.

SSPC's Abrasive Specification No. 1 (SSPC-AB 1) for Mineral and Slag Abrasives was updated on April 15, 2013.

The standard was developed to establish quality benchmarks for non-metallic abrasives and to provide a classification scheme that would allow users to select the appropriate size distribution for projects.

It contains requirements for classification, evaluation, and performance of mineral and slag or other byproduct abrasives used for blast cleaning steel and other surfaces for painting and other purposes.

SSPC-AB 1 contains requirements for classifying and evaluating mineral and slag or other non-metallic abrasives used for blast cleaning steel and other surfaces.

The specification is designed for facility owners and specifiers, abrasive manufacturers and suppliers, surface preparation, and coating contractors and inspectors.

Updates on Responsibilities, Appendix

The scope has been expanded to include manufactured non-metallic abrasives like silicone carbide that are neither naturally occurring minerals or slag byproducts.that meet the requirements of the standard.

The update also clarifies responsibilities for testing to determine initial qualification to the standard, conformance testing for continued compliance, and testing for field quality control. The supplier is responsible for both third-party testing to determine initial qualification and conformance testing for continued compliance, when it is required by the purchaser.

The contractor is responsible for field testing for oil and soluble salt contamination of new media before use and for testing the work mix before field use. Testing is required once per work shift or per eight-hour period, whichever is shorter. Documenting the initial qualification testing includes requirements for the credentials of the laboratory performing the qualification testing of the abrasive.

The new AB 1 includes manufactured non-metallic abrasives, such as silicone carbide.

An appendix has also been added that contains additional requirements for non-metallic abrasives used by the U.S. Navy. The appendix is non-mandatory, unless specified by the purchaser, and includes requirements for friability, radioactivity, and inspection currently required by MIL-A-22262(SH).
